Dongtou Passenger Port Cruise Terminal

Golden A' Design Award Winner 2025

Approaching from the water's surface, which occupies the lower third of the view, you encounter a contemporary passenger terminal building that stretches horizontally across the middle distance where water meets land, its presence both substantial and graceful as it hovers at the waterfront's edge. The water itself appears as deep teal or blue-gray, its surface gently textured with small ripples that catch light and create subtle movement, feeling cool and fresh like an early morning or late afternoon when the air is calm and the day's temperature moderate. Rising from this aquatic foreground, the terminal building extends from left to right across most of the composition, perhaps spanning three hundred feet or more in length judging by the tiny human figures visible along its edges who provide scale reference, revealing this to be a substantial civic structure. The building's most distinctive feature is its flowing white roof that describes a series of graceful curves, imagine running your hand along smooth sculpted plaster or feeling the arc of an upturned bowl, these curves creating four prominent arched openings that penetrate through the structure's facade from bottom to top. Through these arched openings, warm golden-amber light glows from within, suggesting the color temperature of late afternoon sunlight streaming through honey or the warm illumination of incandescent fixtures, this interior warmth contrasting beautifully with the cool white of the building's exterior surfaces and the blue-gray tones of water and sky. The building's exterior cladding appears smooth and pristine, like touching fresh white paint or polished stone, its surface uniform except where shadow and light create subtle tonal variations across the curved forms. Toward the right third of the composition, a vertical tower element rises above the horizontal roof line, this tower distinguished by a faceted or ribbed surface that creates vertical striations, imagine running fingers down corrugated material or feeling the alternating ridges and valleys of textured surfaces, this dimensional articulation causing the tower to catch light differently across its various planes, some surfaces bright where they face the light source, others falling into gentle shadow in the receding angles. Small human figures, appearing as dark silhouettes roughly one-fiftieth the building's height, populate both a waterfront promenade at the building's base and what appears to be an accessible roof terrace, their presence animating the architecture and suggesting active public engagement, the sounds one might imagine include gentle conversation, footsteps on paved surfaces, perhaps the distant call of seabirds and the quiet lapping of water against the structure's base. The sky above occupies the upper third of the composition, transitioning from deeper blue-gray at the top to slightly warmer, paler tones toward the horizon, scattered white and pale gray cumulus clouds drift across this expanse, their soft cotton-like forms suggesting fair weather and gentle atmospheric conditions, the air feeling clear and fresh, neither humid nor arid, with that particular quality of light and atmosphere found in coastal environments where land and water meet. In the far right background, a forested hillside rises, its vegetation rendered in muted blue-green tones softened by atmospheric distance, these trees appearing less distinct than foreground elements, their forms suggesting the soft texture of distant foliage, like looking at velvet or moss from far away where individual details merge into general texture and color impression. Moving left to right across the terminal structure, the rhythm of the four major arched openings creates a visual cadence, the first arch at far left, then proceeding rightward at regular intervals with the fourth positioned just before the vertical tower element begins, this rhythmic repetition providing both structural logic and aesthetic order. The building's profile against the sky shows crisp definition, its designed edges precise and intentional, while at the waterline where structure meets reflection, edges soften as ripples and reflections create visual complexity, the terminal's illuminated interior and white surfaces mirroring in the water below as wavering golden and pale streaks that dance with the water's gentle movement. The overall spatial experience suggested by this view is one of openness and connection, the terminal functioning as an elegant threshold between land and water, its transparent arched openings and accessible circulation areas suggesting ease of movement and welcoming accessibility rather than enclosure or barrier, the architecture appearing to facilitate rather than impede the transition between terrestrial arrival and maritime departure, the warm interior glow especially suggesting shelter, hospitality, and human occupation within the building's protective curves.

Located at Tantoushan Bay in Dongtou, the site serves as a link between urban and scenic areas. Inspired by the concept of Symbiosis of Mountain and Sea, terraced setback buildings and green slopes are designed. They blend the mountain and sea elements to craft a three dimensional space. It connects the mountains and the coastline longitudinally, and incorporates an 800meter commercial waterfront belt transversely. Vertically, it zones the transport, commercial, and ecological corridors, forming a low carbon symbiotic entity.
