Sfumato Shelving System

Platinum A' Design Award Winner 2020

A modular shelving system composed of three distinct configurations stands arranged against a smoothly graduated backdrop that shifts from medium warm gray above to pale cream below, creating an atmospheric studio environment. Beginning at the left, the first shelving unit rises in an asymmetrical stepped profile, its framework rendered in clean cool white suggesting fresh paper or snow. This leftmost unit features solid cabinet boxes at its base with smooth drawer fronts, while above these enclosed volumes an open metal framework ascends, defining rectangular compartments of varying sizes through slender vertical and horizontal bars. The compartments hold books with spines displaying colors of deep blue, teal green, and touches of warmer tones. Moving rightward to the center of the composition, two additional shelving configurations appear, their frameworks finished in warm taupe and sandy beige tones reminiscent of natural stone or weathered wood. These central and right units share the same architectural logic: solid enclosed storage volumes below featuring drawers and cabinet doors, transitioning upward into increasingly open skeletal frameworks. The rectangular openings within these frameworks vary in proportion, some tall and narrow, others wider and shorter, creating an irregular rhythm like windows in an old building or the varied notes of a musical composition. Within these compartments rest white binders, black archival boxes with numbered labels, and additional books, their presence suggesting organized professional or domestic use. The overall height of the configurations varies, the tallest elements reaching perhaps twice human height, while the base cabinets appear roughly waist-high. The lighting feels soft and even, like an overcast day, casting gentle shadows beneath the cabinet volumes without harsh contrasts. The metal framework profiles appear quite slender, perhaps the width of a finger, giving the upper portions a delicate linear quality, almost like drawings suspended in space. The entire arrangement creates a gentle curve across the viewing field, inviting the eye to travel from the bright white unit at left through the warmer toned configurations toward the right edge.

The dynamic outline of this shelf system evokes the skyline of an urban landscape – spacious and massive at the bottom, broken and fragmented at the top, with a continuous horizontal base. Different configurations and dimensions are realized through the simple combining of the modules. Sfumato is a modular, stand-alone or wall shelf system for your small items. Those you want to exhibit or hide, either with a play of shadows or closed doors.
